With so many books already on our shelves and a never-ending TBR list, finding time for fresh literary conversations can be a challenge. That’s why book podcasts are such a brilliant way to stay connected. Offering rich, thoughtful discussions and recommendations you can enjoy anytime, anywhere.

 

At our recent Book Swap & Bookish Group at Battersea Bookshop, members shared a long list of favourite UK book podcasts. The list was so extensive, we’ve split it into two parts: UK and USA. Here, we highlight 10 of the best UK podcasts, each bringing something unique for different reading tastes and interests. Whether you’re after author insights, genre deep-dives, or fresh recommendations, you’re sure to find your next audio fix.

Sara & Cariad's Weirdos Book Club

Description:

Comedians and best friends Sara Pascoe and Cariad Lloyd celebrate funny, clever, and unusual books with guest weirdos in this joyful, joke-filled book club for people who love reading.

Why it's a Favourite:

Sara and Cariad’s friendship is a joy to listen to. They’re clever, insightful hosts, and as authors themselves, their chats with guest writers are genuinely illuminating.

 

Shedunnit

Description:

Caroline Crampton, lovingly unravels the mysteries behind classic detective and Golden Age crime stories. Each episode dives into iconic authors, forgotten gems, and why these tales endure.

Why it’s a Favourite:

Her research is meticulous, and the episodes double as fascinating history lessons, rich with social and cultural context. We love Caroline’s Green Penguin Book Club, where she documents her journey of reading and discussing every crime or green title from the main Penguin series, in order.

 

The Conversation with Nadine Matheson

Description:

The best-selling author of the 'Inspector Anjelica Henley' series sits down with fellow authors for insightful, honest, and entertaining conversations. Topics range from craft and creativity to publishing challenges, offering an honest, inspiring look into the world of books.

Why it's a Favourite:

Description:

Why it’s a Favourite:

It’s wonderfully nostalgic, perfect for reminiscing about the books we once loved. Also A great listen for anyone looking to pass on some retro recommendations to the next generation.

 

You’re Booked

Description:

Daisy Buchanan talks to fellow authors about the books that shaped them including childhood favourites and literary obsessions, offering a charming glimpse into their reading lives, shelves, and personal histories with books.

Why it's a Favourite:

Daisy is a fantastic interviewer, she’s warm, witty, and insightful. As an author herself, it’s a joy to hear her connect over books she genuinely knows and loves. She also gives great book recommendations.

 

If you like this check out early episodes of Sentimental Garbage with author Caroline O’Donoghue. It started out as a ‘chick-lit’ podcast where guests talked about books that society might deem shameful (we felt seen by the Sweet Valley High episode). Every now and then she’ll drop a bookish episode so definitely worth a follow.

 

Book Reccos: Between the Pages

Description:

Hosted by friends Jess and Lauren, this book podcast offers spoiler‑free discussion, monthly reading themes, guest interviews, and enthusiastic recommendations spanning fiction and nonfiction.

Why it's a Favourite:

Jess and Lauren’s upbeat vibes, thoughtful recs, and curated reading themes keep us inspired. They read loads, get tons of proofs, and aren’t afraid to be honest about what they love (or don’t). Their enthusiasm and authenticity really shine through.

 

The Diverse Bookshelf

Description:

Created and hosted by Samia Aziz, The Diverse Bookshelf showcases diverse literature. It features interviews with writers across a broad range of cultural backgrounds and genres, amplifying underrepresented voices in UK literature.

Why it's a Favourite:

Samia goes beyond the book, delving into the issues and themes with the author guests. You come away not just with reading recommendations, but with a broader, more thoughtful view of the world.

 

Backlisted

Description:

Co‑hosted by John Mitchinson, a British publisher and head of research for the panel game QI, and Andy Miller, a British author and editor. Celebrating books that have stood the test of time. Each episode features a guest discussing a favourite backlist title, uncovering hidden gems and reviving literary treasures.

Why it's a Favourite:

It’s a brilliant blend of literary enthusiasm and deep knowledge. The hosts and guests are passionate and witty, making you want to read (or re-read) everything they discuss.

 

The Slightly Foxed Podcast

Description:

Brought to you by the independent-minded book review magazine, Slightly Foxed introduces readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. An isight behind the scenes with staff to learn about what makes this magazine so loved.

Why it's a Favourite:

We love its fiercely independent spirit and dedication to books that fall outside the mainstream. It feels like a quiet rebellion against trends, thoughtful, charming, and full of genuine literary passion.

 

BBC A Good Read

Description:

Each week, presenter Harriett Gilbert is joined by two guests who each recommend a favourite book. Together, they discuss and debate the picks in this long-running BBC Radio 4 show.

Why it's a Favourite:

The guests often read far outside their comfort zones, and their reactions are refreshingly honest. The mix of unexpected choices and candid conversation makes for consistently engaging listening.

If you like the tone, the BBC also have the Radio 4 Bookclub and The Radio 2 Book Club or Open Book on BBC Sounds.
